HOMEWORK
Ottawa Elementary School believes that homework, properly designed, carefully planned, and geared to the development of the individual student, meets a real need and has a definite place in the educational program. The assignment of homework can be expected. Students’ grades will reflect the completion of all work, including outside assignments. Homework is also part of the student’s preparation for the proficiency tests and graduation.

Homework is assigned to help the student become more self-reliant, learn to work independently, improve the skills that have been taught, and complete certain projects such as reading of worthwhile books and the preparation of research papers. Homework assignments also afford a way for parents to acquaint themselves with the school program and their own child’s educational progress.

The amount and type of homework given is to be decided by the classroom teacher. Care will be taken that students are not unduly burdened by excessive homework assignments for any one school day. In grades 6-8, failure to complete all homework on time will result in the student being assigned to lunch detention. In case of absence from school, a parent is asked to make arrangements to receive their child’s homework. The homework will be due within two days of the child’s return to school. Extensions may be granted in the cases of extended absences. Students should check make arrangements with their teachers to determine the due dates of homework missed when on an extended absence.
Students are expected:
  1. To do each assignment to the best of his/her ability.
  2. To turn in assignments when they are due.
  3. To become familiar with the locations of available resource materials in the library and other resource areas.
  4. To seek help when necessary.
  5. To prepare and adequately study for tests or quizzes announced by teachers.
Parents are expected:
  1. To provide the environment necessary for the development and nurturing of good study habits.
  2. To closely monitor the quality and the extent to which assignments are completed.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AND NETWORKS
Before any student may enhance his/her school career through participation in the school’s computer network, s/he and his/her parents must sign an agreement that defines the conditions under which the student may participate. Failure to abide by all of the terms of the agreement may lead to suspension and/or termination of the student’s computer account and possible disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct or referral to law enforcement authorities.

The computer lab is open daily for student use when adult supervision is provided. Students are to use computer equipment, including printers, for school-related projects only. Personal use of the computer lab is prohibited.
PROFICIENCY TESTING / STUDENT ASSESSMENT
The State of Ohio proficiency tests will be administered to students in grades 4, 6, and 8. The school must keep these tests secured until it is time for the students to take the test. Any student suspected of cheating on a proficiency test will be entitled to due process. If it is determined that a student has cheated, the score for that test will be invalidated. The classroom teacher will review all rules will students before the test is given. A complete copy of the district proficiency test security provisions is available in the school office.

A competency-based examination is administered to students in all other grade levels (1, 2, 3, 5, and 7). These test results are used to help staff determine instructional needs.

Classroom tests will be used to assess student progress and assign grades. These are selected or prepared by teachers to assess how well students have achieved specific objectives.
SECTION III – STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Ottawa Elementary School provides students with the opportunity to broaden their learning through curricular-related and extra-curricular activities.

A curricular related activity may be for credit, required for a particular course, and/or contain school subject matter.

Extra-curricular activities do not reflect the school curriculum, but are made available to students to allow them to pursue additional worthwhile activities.

The school has many student groups that are authorized by the school. It is the district’s policy that only authorized groups are those approved by the Board of Education and sponsored by a staff member. Authorized groups include:

JEDI Stock Market Club
Asset Builders Club Power of the Pen
Junior Blue Crew Student Council
Quiz Bowl Team Peer Mediation
Technology Club Ecology Club
Chess Club
All students are permitted to participate in the activities of their choosing, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. Participation in these activities is a privilege and not a right, and students may be prohibited from all or part of their participation in such activities by authorized school personnel without further notice, hearing and/or appeal rights in accordance with Board Policy 5610.05.
NONSCHOOL-SPONSORED CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES
Nonschool-sponsored student groups organized for religious, political, or philosophical reasons may meet during noninstructional hours. The application for permission can be obtained from the principal. The application must verify that students are initiating the activity, attendance is voluntary, that no school or staff person is actively involved in the event, that the event will not interfere with school activities and that nonschool persons do not play a regular role in the event. School rules will still apply regarding behavior and equal opportunity to participate.

Membership in any fraternity, sorority, or other secret society as proscribed by law is not permitted. All groups must comply with school rules and must provide equal opportunity to participate.
