PROMOTION AND RETENTION
Promotion to the next grade level is based on the following criteria:

• Current level of achievement

• Potential for success at the next grade level

• Emotional, physical, and/or social maturity

A student will be considered for retention if s/he is truant (absent without excuse) for more than ten percent (10%) of the required attendance days of the current school year AND has failed two or more of the required curriculum subject areas in the current grade.

Even if s/he falls in the preceding category, a student may be promoted or placed if the principal and the teachers of the classes that the student failed agree that the student is academically prepared.
RECOGNITION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Students who have displayed significant achievements during the course of the year are recognized for their accomplishments. Areas that may merit recognition include, but are not limited to, academics, athletics, performing arts, citizenship, and volunteerism. Recognition for such activities is initiated by the staff and coordinated by the principal and dean of students
Honor Rolls
Students who achieve a grade point average of 3.25 – 3.99 will be named to the Honor Roll, while students achieving a 4.00 GPA will be part of our “All A” Honor Roll.

All “A” Honor Roll (4.0 Grade Point Average)

All courses and subjects will be used to determine a student’s Grade Point Average. This includes health, art, music, computer education, and physical education.

Honor Roll (3.25 GPA or higher)

All courses and subjects required by the Minimum Standards in the State of Ohio will be used to determine a student’s Grade Point Average. This includes health, art, music, computer education, and physical education.

A student can receive a grade lower than a “B” in a subject and still be named to the Honor Roll provided that the student’s grade point average is 3.25 or higher. Any grade lower than a “C” excludes a student from being named to the honor roll regardless of the grade point average.

All courses are “weighted” based on the number of days the class meets per week.

This honor is acknowledged by a letter home, posting outside of the main office, notice sent to area media, and bumper sticker sent home.
Athletic Awards
Requirements for athletic awards are developed by each head coach with the approval of the athletic director. These requirements will be reviewed with interested students by the appropriate coach.
Special Awards
In addition to the academic and athletic awards, student achievement is recognized through the Student of the Month Awards, the Achievement and Attendance Awards, the Principal’s Award, and the Super Friday/Blue Ribbon Breakfast award program.
HOMEWORK
Ottawa Elementary School believes that homework, properly designed, carefully planned, and geared to the development of the individual student, meets a real need and has a definite place in the educational program. The assignment of homework can be expected. Students’ grades will reflect the completion of all work, including outside assignments. Homework is also part of the student’s preparation for the proficiency tests and graduation.

Homework is assigned to help the student become more self-reliant, learn to work independently, improve the skills that have been taught, and complete certain projects such as reading of worthwhile books and the preparation of research papers. Homework assignments also afford a way for parents to acquaint themselves with the school program and their own child’s educational progress.

The amount and type of homework given is to be decided by the classroom teacher. Care will be taken that students are not unduly burdened by excessive homework assignments for any one school day. In grades 6-8, failure to complete all homework on time will result in the student being assigned to lunch detention. In case of absence from school, a parent is asked to make arrangements to receive their child’s homework. The homework will be due within two days of the child’s return to school. Extensions may be granted in the cases of extended absences. Students should check make arrangements with their teachers to determine the due dates of homework missed when on an extended absence.
Students are expected:
  1. To do each assignment to the best of his/her ability.
  2. To turn in assignments when they are due.
  3. To become familiar with the locations of available resource materials in the library and other resource areas.
  4. To seek help when necessary.
  5. To prepare and adequately study for tests or quizzes announced by teachers.
Parents are expected:
  1. To provide the environment necessary for the development and nurturing of good study habits.
  2. To closely monitor the quality and the extent to which assignments are completed.
